National taxes
When you start living and working in the Netherlands, you are required to pay taxes. There are several national taxes and the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) is responsible for collecting these taxes. But which taxes do you have to pay and which tax facilities apply in your situation? We list the main tax types that you will most likely encounter in the Netherlands. Since this page is an overview, you may have some questions left unanswered. Please visit the website of the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.
Income tax
Almost everyone living in the Netherlands is taxed on their income, wealth and assets. The amount of tax you need to pay depends on your level of income. To prevent you from having to pay your annual taxes in a single large sum, a percentage of your monthly salary is automatically deducted by your employer and then transferred to the tax authority. This will be clearly listed on your monthly salary statement issued by your employer.
Income tax return
Everyone who receives a declaration letter from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration is required to file an income tax return before the 1st of April or May. In this tax return, you declare your income and assets. The tax office uses the return to determine whether you need to pay tax or receive a tax refund. If you have not received a form from the authorities but expect to have to pay over €45 in taxes or receive a refund of over €14, you should also file a tax return. If you have arrived or left the Netherlands during the course of the year, filing your tax return might be worthwhile as you may be entitled to a substantial tax refund. Learn more about filing your tax return on the website of the Dutch government.
Filing your taxes
You can file your taxes digitally via the website of the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. You will need a DigiD to apply. You can also enlist the help of a tax accountant or advisor. If you have any questions about your taxes, contact the Dutch tax office on 0800 0543. Please note that officials can generally only help you in Dutch.
Motor vehicle tax
If you live in the Netherlands and own a vehicle such as a car, van, motorcycle or trailer, you need to pay motor vehicle tax. The amount of tax depends on the type of vehicle and other factors such as weight and environmental impact. After registering your vehicle, you automatically receive an assessment from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.
