Some of them you need to arrange before you relocate to the Netherlands and others upon your arrival. On this page, you will find an overview of the formalities you need to consider and take care of.

Everyone who lives in the Netherlands for longer than four months needs to register as a resident with the relevant municipality. Those staying for four months or less can enrol with the Registry for Non-Residents to receive a citizen service number (BSN). BSN number
A BSN number is a unique citizen service number for everyone who has to deal with governmental organisations within the Netherlands such as hospitals, schools and banks, for example. With the citizen service number, the Dutch government wants to improve the services it provides to you, combat fraud and improve protection of your privacy.

DigiD
DigiD
To access Dutch government services online, you need a DigiD (digital identification). This lets you validate your identity when accessing the websites of, for instance, municipalities, the tax office, pension funds and healthcare providers. You can log in anywhere easily and your personal information is secure. Your DigiD is connected to your citizen service number (BSN), so make sure you have a BSN before applying.
