Local taxes
In addition to national taxes, residents in Utrecht (or any other city or town in the Netherlands) also pay local taxes. Certain taxes apply to everyone to cover services such as sewage and waste disposal. Other taxes, however, depend on your circumstances. Water tax
Every household is charged with a water tax. This tax is used contribute to the regional water management and water purification, as well as to maintain dykes and water ways. Please note: this tax does not account for your drinking water usage. This is separately charged and monitored by your local water supplier.

Waste tax
Household waste is collected and disposed of by the municipal service. You pay a waste tax for this. The amount depends on the number of people in your household.

Property tax
If you own property, such as an apartment or a house, you will be charged property tax based on its value.

Sewage tax
Property owners also pay sewage tax. Houses and buildings are connected to the main municipal sewage system and owners pay a fixed rate for this connection. If you discharge a lot of wastewater, you will be charged accordingly.
